At BestStart Tory Street, we celebrated Matariki with our whanau and with our community. Our tamariki worked hard learning new waiata and Matariki haka. The teachers were dedicated to teach tamariki the new waiata and the meaning behind them, which was challenging but fun!

We held a whanau evening where our tamariki performed their waiata to their parents, we served yummy vegetable soup and kumara bread. The children bought the vegetables at the supermarket in an excursion the day before. Tamariki were fully involved in preparing the vegetables and making Kumara bread. We also had a fire pit where we could sit around it, roasting marshmallows and sharing korero.

We visited our “vibrant city” with a group of tamariki and performed our waiata at Cuba mall. We had a great crowd cheering us on. We had lots of freebies to give away and everyone had such great fun.

Our tamariki were proud to wear piupiu’s and tipare (headband) which they made at the centre and of course perform the new haka they had learnt.
