Today, the tamariki worked together to create a lake! They used a variety of machinery to dig deep into the clay. The tamariki discussed whether they thought the Lake should be shallow or deep. They wondered if it was too deep, sharks may decide to live in the lake. We thought about the Lake that we have in Taupo and if that had any sharks living in it. After much thinking and talking we realised that no there are no sharks living in our Lake Taupo and so we would be safe to create a deep lake. The tamariki worked very hard to dig down deep into the hard clay. Once they felt the lake was deep enough, we began filling it up with water.

At BestStart Abacus we are very fortunate to have a large natural outdoor area where tamariki have many opportunities to explore and discover. Within Te Whariki it says, “children learn through play: by doing, asking questions, interacting with others, devising theories about how things work and then trying them out” We have a variety of natural materials outside that provide tamariki with opportunities to Investigate,  explore with ideas and collaborate with others. Once the lake was deep enough, that tamariki had so much fun jumping and splashing in the lake!
