The trip was all about learning about Maori culture with focus on language, music, waiata (songs) and gardening. Shawne - our instructor for the trip, took children out to show the way Kumara is grown and  harvested. Parents and children took turns to dig for kumara in the garden. There were triumphant smiles as they found Kumara. Shawne also demonstrated the use of Maori gardening tools like the Ko, which is similar to Hoe. Children took turns to use the Ko. The workshop also had use of Maori rhythm sticks called Rakau which they used to play on a beat. Later, children were given some air dry clay that they used to make their own Maori pendant in the shape of a a Koru (a spiral shape) which signifies new beginnings.
