 Learning about our local histories

Our centre has been very interested in pūrākau - Māori legends and this naturally weaved into our daily curriculum through the telling of our local legends Pania of the reef, Te Mata o Rongokako and others.

We want to continue to deepen our learning about our local histories and develop a strong sense of belonging within our communities. With a focus on ko wai au - who am I where tamariki can learn and develop more about local stories, legends and make connections through developing relationships within our community.

Our tamariki have been standing up in front of their peers and with the help of their Kaiako they have been introducing themselves. Experiences such as this tautoko the learning and development of te ao Māori (Māori world view).

We are so fortunate to have such a marvellous heritage of our wonderful nation and it is our responsibility to honor Ti Tiriti o Waitangi and the tamariki to be diverse in their actions.

We would love to build upon this and inspire tamariki to explore their own stories of who they are and where they have come from to deepen their sense of belonging, whakapapa, culture, language and identity.
