Our tamariki (children) arrived at Preschool this morning and were greeted by a sight that can only be described as rather magical.

Our wonderful Preschool teachers had set up a scene of a “Dragons egg” for the children to investigate. Its amazing what a little bit of imagination on our teachers part can conjure up for our tamariki.

They staged a dragons nest sitting perched on top of fauna and a little bit of sparkle and gold paint. They cordoned off the dragons nest sight with orange plastic fencing left behind after our playground upgrade. We placed a blue tooth speaker behind the dragons egg and played dragon noises to entice our tamariki even further.

The following morning the orange fencing had disappeared and so had the dragons egg. What was left behind was foot prints leading to the front door. The looks of disbelief and amazement were a sight to see. So much fun encouraging imagination like this.

What has followed since then can only be described as a magical experience that encouraged the tamariki to focus on all things dragon like, looking to the environment to support their play.  We have had pretend dragons in the playground, finding remnants of what they believe to be a dragons tail (yellow twine from climbing frame) dragon scales and skin (fallen from our magnolia tree). This was such a great way to encourage imaginations and children going home to share with their whanau. We even had parents come in to find out all about our dragons egg.
