Last month in the Young Children’s Centre at BestStart Taradale, we had a wonderful time celebrating Matariki, the Māori new year. Our tamariki’s knowledge has been refreshed of this important celebration through plenty of rich learning experiences ranging from arts and crafts, storytelling/myths and legends, waiata and dance, and of course sharing of kai!

We held a parent and whānau evening to celebrate Matariki which was an absolute success. The tamariki were actively involved in the planning process and enjoyed helping prepare the vegetables for our special Matariki soups. A wide range of experiences were provided for our tamariki and whānau to engage in together throughout the night, from popsicle stick stars to decorate, decorating our seven wooden stars to display in the centre and our disco party!

A special thank you to our amazing student Sara, who helped plan all these activities and created a wonderful wharenui display. Also, another special thank you to Tom one of our fathers here in the centre for creating our wooden stars. And an overall thank you to our wonderful Young Children’s Centre whānau for their kind koha (donations) of vegetables for our soups.
