Sensory and imaginative play have been key interests amongst the Explorers Room at BestStart Marne Street and with it also being such nice weather outside we created a sandpit environment that stimulate both these interests.

When the tamairki came in to find Jurassic Park set up in the sand pit, they quickly darted outside to get amongst it. Exploring the leaves and branches that we had placed for both touch and smell as well as a collection of different dinosaur, the tamariki had turns at making the dinosaur's stomp along the sandpit.

We then took the tamariki on a boat ride, using driftwood and wooden planks to represent a boat, a group of tamariki climbed on board while we sung  'Row, Row, Row your boat' exploring and developing our oral language as we made our way down the river looking at the different sea animals sitting outside the boat.

The next day we took the tamariki back to see the sea creatures as we built a beach scene using rocks, driftwood and the trough, some of the tamariki enjoyed climbing into the trough and pretending to swim as they looked out for the sea animals, while a group of us sung campfire songs around our pretend fire.

All in a days work here in the Explorers at BestStart Marne.
