During the week leading up to ANZAC Day tamariki and kaiako had a strong focus on ANZAC day and what it means to us living in New Zealand. Tamariki engaged in art work and group times which explored ANZAC stories and the significance of the poppy flower. We were lucky enough to be able to take groups of tamariki on walks down to our local war memorial to lay the poppy wreath's and crosses tamariki had worked together to create. This allowed tamariki to see what a memorial site looked like in person and helped them to create the links between what we had been discussing and the images they had seen of ANZAC services. It was lovely to get to create the connection between the centre and local community for tamariki.

We were also lucky enough to have one of our whaanau bring in his medals and memorabilia from his time in the army to share with us. It was very special for tamariki to get to see these items in person and helped them to gain further understanding and sparked curiosity surrounding the importance of celebrating ANZAC day for different people and whaanau and how tamariki could also play a part in these celebrations.
