Recently, at BestStart Kelvin Grove, children have been very interested in pretend play, particularly taking on roles of important figures in the community such as police, doctors and firefighters.

Listening to their play, our teachers noticed the children predominantly seeing police as people who “put baddies in jail”. So to help change their perceptions, the amazing Police from Palmerston North Police Station including a group of new police graduates came to share with the children all the other roles of a police officer especially educating tamariki about the positive difference police make in the wider community.

Awesome to see our centre vision – “At one with child, whānau and community” in action, building shared relationships and understandings. One of our children’s Mum works with the Police so kindly organised this visit- awesome having these whānau relationships to support our tamariki learning!
