Over the past few weeks the tamariki (children) have been indulging in many baking activities and experiences. Throughout these experiences we have included hand hygiene and general health and body hygiene. Thoroughly washing hands for 20 seconds before baking and drying well, and trying not to sneeze and cough around the baking table.

Kaiako (teacher) Kirsten planned a germ activity. Using a plate, drawing some bugs on the plate with whiteboard markers and then adding water, the tamariki were able to see the bugs floating in the water. Kirsten then went through with the tamariki the importance of keeping their hand hygiene up. The tamariki then got stuck into the baking.

Throughout this experience the tamariki were able to use numeracy by counting how many scoops needed as well as ensuring out all of the ingredients. As well as literacy as there were lots of conversations about what was going on and noticing the science behind the baking. They then has the fun of combining all the ingredients and carefully putting the mixture in the tins. Then for the best part the tamariki are able to indulge these yummy treats for afternoon kai.
