We’ve been making some changes to our den room at BestStart Rongotai this month to create a focused space for our tamariki who are preparing for school. We’ve moved our whānau corner out into our main classroom to create a Be School Ready room with a cosy literacy and maths area with lots of different forms of writing and numbers from all over the world. This room we use for our tuakana mat time and also a formal Be School Ready group in the afternoon where we have sessions focused on developing our social, literacy and numeracy skills through fun activities which relate to our current group focus.

So over the last few weeks we have been; drawing pictures of people who help us and writing the words of these people underneath and we've created our own stories in our own special writing books. We've played maths games which involve counting, identifying numbers and sequencing patterns. We've also enjoyed a group puzzle where we had to sequence some numbered pieces with a picture on which spelt out a word and we had to figure out what word it was as we made the letter sounds. It's been awesome to be able to spend some quality focused time with our older tamariki and help them prepare for school.
