To support children learning about caring for our world, we made honey wax wraps with the children at BestStart Palmerston North Preschool.

We used bees wax infused with jojoba oil and pine resin. The children chose a piece of fabric then a peeler was used to peel pieces of wax onto the fabric. It was covered with baking paper and ironed to melt the wax into the fabric.

While making the wraps we talked to the children about how they could use the wraps instead of cling film and why cling film such as glad wrap is harmful to the environment.

Whilst some single-use plastics are at least recyclable cling film is extremely difficult to recycle. Plastic food wrap ends up in landfill and in our oceans where it is causing harm to the environment and nature. On landfill it will sit and possibly leach its chemicals for

years, not degrading and elsewhere is a risk to wildlife or fish who may get caught up in it or eat it.

Thank you to parents who donated the material and a big thank you to Win Mitchell who prepared the fabric and spent time at Preschool helping the children make these eco friendly reusable wraps. It was great to see Damian using his wrap, by wrapping his sandwiches in his lunchbox.
