As you all know, Matariki is the Maori New Year, its all about celebration, and spending time with family. Matariki is also important for agriculture. The coming of Matariki symbolized the harvest festival where the Maori feasted on the crops they had prepared.

Matariki is important because it also is the time to restart the Maori calendar. At Best Start Botany Junction Matariki was celebrated in the month of July. Each day the tamariki along with their Kaiako have been busy doing things and activities relating to Matariki. Making night sky play dough, star cookies, listening to Maori Matariki stories, making friendship soup, Maori patterned head bands, weaving the Harakeke and most importantly celebrating with our families over shared kai.
