BestStart Waihi Kindy celebrate Matariki
Matariki is a star cluster which appears in the night sky during mid-winter. According to the Maramataka (the Māori lunar calendar), the reappearance of Matariki, brings the old lunar year to a close and marks the beginning of the new year. Hence, Matariki is associated with the Māori New Year.
The Waihi Kindy Kaiako, tamariki and whanau celebrated Matariki over the past two weeks. The children enjoyed learning waiata, making starts and a beautiful Matariki display! They also enjoyed Matariki soup which they helped to make!
The children built some their knowledge around Matariki through arts and craft and story books . Some beautiful Matariki Stars were created and displayed in the centre, just gorgeous!!
We were alos fortunate enough to be invited to a marae by Pukewa Kohunga Reo. We experienced a powhiri and enjoyed a hakari afterwards.
Planting will be completed around the same time as the new moon!
