Our lovely Kaiako Karen has been exploring the centre pepeha with the older children and creating learning activities that make this a living document for our tamariki.  Recently, a group of parents and children trekked the Piwakawaka track on Rongokako (Te Mata Peak).  The children have been exploring the legend of Rongokako, one of our maunga, and retelling the story themselves through clay work.

As the group trekked through the track on Rongokako they experienced fully being part of our Montessori pepeha. The sights of the trees, inspiring views looking down at the Bay, the low clouds; smells of the forest, the mud, the Redwood forest needles; the touch of feet on earth and hands on trees, collecting fossil shells; the taste of the damp air; the sound of the birds and friends, the feeling of those who have trekked before are keeping us safe….

To know the present, the histories must be shared, celebrated and then traditional pepeha become part of all our Aotearoa experience. Our Montessori philosophy is closely linked to our pepeha and recognises that our tamariki are the hope and promise for mankind. Hence we develop their understanding about being part of a larger global community, collectively responsible for our Whenua Papatūānuku.
