At the end of 2018 BestStart Waiwhetu were fortunate to be selected by Ezra Builders, a locally owned and operated business, as the recipient of a bi-annual service day. For this day, we were given two great builders, who asked us for a list of jobs that needed doing or items we would like built, and in addition to the labour being free, all materials would be covered by them as well.

Here at BestStart Waiwhetu, we recognize the importance of providing an environment that is respectful and empowering for each child and one that allows children time to engage with and take responsibility for the natural world. We are guided by the Maori concept of Kaitiakitanga, and through this our young children learn to respect, care for, and protect people, places and things.

One thing that was really important to us that we wanted to be able to receive from this service day were planter boxes. With the planter boxes, we were hopeful that we would be able to grow beautiful produce that we could enjoy in centre, and also share with our families and community, our own way of being able to give back.

The learning opportunities for our young children have been plentiful, with them taking such pride and responsibility for the plants. An excursion to a local garden centre gave an opportunity for us to select our plants, and for children to ask questions and learn how to care for them.

We can’t wait to be able to share the fruits of our labour.
