From the 15 June to 20 July ABC Howick embraced Matariki – The Maori New Year.  Matariki symbolises a time of renewal and an opportunity to reflect on who we are at this moment in time, build connections and strengthen togetherness with our whanau.

The children had the opportunity to participate in a range of experiences including the Traditional Maori art of weaving and were also successful in crafting our very own Korowai (cloak) from leaves. Fostering the Te Ao Maori concepts of Manaakitanga (caring for others & the environment) and Whanaungatanga (family) we invited our whanau to a performance of waiata we had learnt especially for Matariki and celebrated together over kai with a beautiful morning tea. We sprung a bit of a surprise on our parents to which they embraced, having their children teach them the waiata, we were incredibly impressed by the efforts and performances of both groups.

To mark Matariki’s end we joined together with whanau again over kai and enjoyed an especially prepared pork bones and puha boil up with fry bread – with this being a delicious new experience for many.
