Today the children had an excursion to a special place of commemoration, Laurie Hall Park, to honour the brave heroes who protected and saved people — not just in Gallipoli but also in New Zealand and all around the world.

In preparation for the activity, the children worked together to create a beautiful wreath using colourful popsicle sticks, gem stones, and some hot glue. The children named it a “rainbow wreath”. The many colours symbolises aroha, manaakitanga, and whanaungatanga, as we promote and celebrate diversity and peace education in light of the recent event in Christchurch.

Once the wreath was completed, dried up and ready to go, the children offered it and laid it on the memorial where we found many other wreaths and poppies from yesterday’s ANZAC celebration. The children also saw the many names of the brave soldiers as well as white crosses with poppies on them. They paused for a moment of silence and sang “Te Aroha” along with actions in NZ sign language.

These lessons on peace education and diversity shall be continued on next month’s activities as the children can further develop their awareness of hauora, kaitiakitanga, as well as their rangatiratanga. Ka pai to mahi, nga tamariki.
