As part of Matariki celebration, we decided to make some kites with the children, after reading the Seven Kites of Matariki. We then planned an excursion to the park for them to fly them. At the park we had a few weather issues with it being rather cold and icy with no wind or breeze, but after some trial and error we managed to get the kites to sail behind the children, which of course caused a lot of excitement and laughter.

We are very lucky to have a park very close to preschool to be able to go on excursions like this one, and the children are already talking about going to the park again. By getting out and exploring, children get to know different spaces in their local community and can experience the natural environment outside of their immediate world inside the centre.
