Over the New Year holiday, our small group of tamariki here at BestStart Te Awamutu ventured off to spend the morning having fun at our local park.  Once we had safely arrived, our tamariki excitedly ran off, ready to engage with our local community as they navigated their way around and through the familiar and unfamiliar equipment. experiences and fostering their confidence in interacting with others.

Each of our tamariki demonstrated their confidence in their new surroundings. Some of our younger tamariki required a little more support from their kaiako as they became more familiar and confident in the wide array of opportunities to explore. Our older tamariki were amazing role models as they ensured their peers were supported to engage through their verbal and non-verbal behaviour. Sharing smiles and laughter strongly encouraged all to have fun and be involved!  To finish off our fun at the park, we gathered together for a delicious picnic.  We were definitely ready to head back to the centre for a much-needed rest.

This was an amazing opportunity for our tamariki to engage in our local community.  Pioneer Park is one of our favourite places to go as it holds so many wonderful experiences we can enjoy.  From the smiles on their faces, it was certain our tamariki had a wonderfully exciting day!  Going out into our community and engaging alongside their peers and local members of the community encourages our tamariki to make connections between people, places and things in their world (Ministry of Education, 2017).  Our tamariki are provided with the opportunity to observe and learn alongside their peers and members of the community, creating shared learning.
