Celebrating Pink Shirt Day at First Steps Newmarket
Today we celebrated pink shirt day at First Steps Newmarket. Pink Shirt Day is a global day that celebrates diversity and creates environments where all people can feel safe, valued and respected. Our children in First Steps Newmarket celebrated 'Pink Shirt Day' as a friendship day celebration which involved wearing and decorating the centre in pink. There were also fun activities, music, and of course sharing of food, conversations, and laughter throughout the day.
Celebrating Pink shirt day meant that we are standing together, speaking up, and saying "STOP BULLYING". We had fun activities where we talked about social skills, having empathy for others, all those strategies to help the children to know how to look after each other. The children learnt more about Friendship and how to spread Kindness all around. They also made a ‘Handprint Friendship Heart’ and 'Handprint Friendship Tree' where we all painted our hands in pink.
In our centre we value and incorporate one of the key component of Maori culture which is the 'Manaakitanga'. It means nurturing relationships, looking after people and being very careful about how others are treated."
Pink Shirt Day may have come and gone, but from us here in First Steps Newmarket we can keep the kindness all year round! …And we say “Everyday is a Friendship Day!”
