At BestStart Tory Street we celebrated another cultural event with our tamariki. We celebrated Sinhala/Tamil New Year which is a Sri Lankan New Year. In South India Tamil Nadu people celebrate the same festival. Tamariki learnt about Sinhala/Tamil New Year at mat times and why we celebrate it and the reasons behind it.
Our tamariki loved the Sri Lankan games that we played. Favourite one was to eat the buns which were hanging on the monkey bars without touching them. Teachers and tamariki had loads of fun doing these games.
Tamariki made milk rice (Kiribath) and enjoyed it at morning and afternoon tea times. We played the drums (Rabana) which was a traditional item. We also made little lamps to keep the candles and coloured beetle leaves. The betel leaves represent the purity and holiness.
To extend the learning and to strengthen our connections with our community, we went to BestStart Leeds Street. They were celebrating Sinhala/Tamil new year too. We helped them make their milk rice and shared some buns with them, so they could enjoy the games. It was great fun teaching and learning with Leeds Street tamariki and teachers.
