Celebrating Te Tiriti o Waitangi
There were lots of opportunities here in Botany Junction for our tamariki to learn and digest the social science concepts of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It was a concept of cultural identity as most of our tamariki explored the value of continuity, Aroha and respect, getting their hands messy with powerful red paint, Te Ao Marama white paint that represented light and black that represented the realm of being. We took steps in painting Maori design ensuring that we give the mana to our little Marae at the end of the session.
It was during the day that we had our kaumatua who outlined to everyone the pronunciation of specific words by reading us a story. There were many opportunities existed for our tamariki to speak basic Te reo and Tikanga Maori throughout our conversations every day. We think the experience was a useful context to explore values such as diversity and respect as our tamariki developed competencies such as participating and contributing. Ka pai tamariki.
