BestStart Balclutha were fortunate to have some members of Fonterra Stirling come along, on July 17th, to teach our tamariki how to make cheese. Georgia's mum and dad both work for Fonterra and Lisa's brother works there too, so it was a real whānau affair.

To make cheese first you have to heat the milk in an electric fry-pan and then add rennet. The milk goes lumpy until its ready to be strained and then after an hour setting in the fridge it can be eaten.

Luckily our wonderful guests knew our tamariki might be hungry before an hour was up so they brought us some cheese to eat while we waited.

There was also a quiz which had prizes of delicious blocks of cheese for those who got in first to correctly answer.

There was so much happening here, community and whānau connections, following instructions, taking turns, health and safety-clean hands, being aware of the risk (hot fry-pans), maths-how many squirts of rennet, science-see how the milk changes, to name just a few awesome learning opportunities.

We are so privileged in our rural setting to have close connections with companies like Fonterra. It will be exciting to see what our next collaboration will be.
