'We're going on a bear hunt' has been a favourite story for the children for some time.  Our inspiring teachers in the Toddler Room have made this come to life, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Teachers at BestStart Roydvale are always thinking about how children learn holistically and they create fun learning opportunities that engage and teach children different concepts.

Together, alongside the children they created a 'bear hunt' themed focus, that you could see around the whole classroom.  They made bear images out of paper plates and a cave the children spent time building together painting and then playing in.  A beautiful textured display was made.  It was placed on the wall outlining the parts of favourite story and using the children's images.  This made the children very excited and promoted their well being, as they felt connected and valued alongside each other.

One day the teachers took the children on a 'bear hunt' outside.  Maps were printed for the children to refer to and carry around.  Children were encouraged and supported by a group of teachers to find the items on the map.  Then teachers helped attached some of the items to their map.  The children were so proud and so were the teachers, as the older children from the Preschool room helped the younger children find the objects.  A large number of children engaged in this tuakane-teina relationship.  This is a very important part of the Maori culture.  It is a model for the buddy system where an older child helps and guides a younger child.

You can continue to hear and see connections being formed throughout the day with the lovely story and the children are so engaged in the learning, as this is what they are interested in.  I wonder what the next focus will be?
