Currently in the prep room the tamariki are interested in symbol systems for making meaning. Making meaning includes understanding or breaking the codes, recognising and using fundamental systems, patterns and codes for literacy. 

On the paper is the alphabet in both lower and upper cases. The tamariki then match these symbols with those on the cups.
