Connecting with our ocean

We have been having a fun and creative time celebrating our ocean! We have had arts and crafts, and sensory exploration as well as spending time to talk about how to care for our oceans. The children had opportunities to share their own knowledge and experiences about the ocean like what lives in the ocean and what should not end up in the ocean, like our rubbish. This was a great follow on from our previous Project planning around sustainability. We were able to share knowledge and contribute at group times discussing what we can do to look after our environments, while reflecting and revisiting our Myths and legends. There was a lot of interest in songs and dancing within these experiences where we could also extend learning opportunities with waiata and kaikani, which supports our new Project Planning of Music and Movement - waita me te korikori .

By understanding how everything is connected in the ocean and how we interact with it as humans, children will learn to care and protect the ocean because they will want it to be a better place – not just for the fish, but for them too.
