Over the last few months a strong interest in the nursery has been early literacy-communication. We responded to this group interest by providing a huge range of early literacy experiences which encouraged the tamariki to engage in, to learn and further develop their vocabulary to support their communication skills.

During this time many of the tamariki have developed an interest in our group time board stories and songs. This has now become a regular daily experience, some of the tamariki have even learnt to initiate this themselves. Our group time songs have also been supporting tamariki to settle into their day, transition from daily routines and regular events as well as providing them with plenty of opportunities to hear, learn and practice a range of vocabulary. Some of the tamariki have been sharing some of the actions and the words to the songs they have learnt here at preschool, at home as well.

Other favourite experiences which we continue to revisit regularly have been, drawing, reading, and painting.
Talking about their peers and their kaiako (teachers), by learning their names and using repetition has allowed the tamariki to make further connections with each other along with further developing their vocabulary.

Using visuals on the walls, in videos and during art experiences have supported the understanding of words and what items look like for the tamariki as well. They often point out previously learnt words and items throughout their play, many of them have been making these connections here and at home. What a great time the tamariki have had together further developing their Early literacy skills to communicate effectively with each other throughout their play.
