For the past couple of weeks, our tamariki (children) have been exploring natural resources (taonga) from our local beach. The seaweed in particular has been very popular to explore. The seaweed was collected dry, then placed in the trough with water.

The tamariki have been fascinated with exploring the different textures and state of the seaweed. There have been lots of conversations between small groups of children, discussing why the texture has changed and stories about their own experiences at the beach.

These conversations support our tamariki to make sense of the world around them using their senses ( touch, sight and smell in this case). Also, when our tamariki share their stories with each other, they are strengthening friendships alongside sharing their own knowledge. When combined, these learning experiences support our tamariki to create and refine their working theories about the world around them.
