Here in the Tuatara Room, we have been exploring the concept of Manaakitanga – focusing on supporting our tamariki in developing nurturing relationships/friendships, looking after people, treating others fairly and including them in play. A big part of this in our room has been a focus on turn-taking.

To help out our tamariki in their journey of this, we purchased some new resources for our room, including some dance ribbons. With our tamariki loving a good song and dance we knew that these would be a valuable tool to help us explore this turn-taking! In the morning we put on some music and brought out the ribbons – though we had a lot there was still one or two tamariki who had to wait for a turn. Kaiako sat alongside tamariki, supporting them in their feelings and naming them such as frustration, while modelling being able to ask for a turn.

For the tamariki having their turn, we were able to encourage their self-expression, while also pointing out their friends were very curious about the ribbons and would love to have a turn soon too. Before long many of the tamariki were starting to offer up their ribbons to their friends for a turn, especially the older tamariki looking out for the younger tamariki by offering up their ribbons when they were finished. Now we could all have fun together exploring our new resources!
