Extending learning and wellbeing
Jiraani, a couple of months ago I wrote a story for you about your focus and concentration whilst doing yoga. Today, I extended your learning and your wellbeing by including positive affirmations with certain poses. When you did the tree pose, I asked you to repeat after me, "I am strong." Other affirmations we said were, "I am brave, I am kind and I am confident'. With each pose, I asked you to breath in slowing all the happy feelings and breathe out all your unwanted feelings such as anger and frustration. I reminded you that if you were feeling frustrated, sad or angry that you could find yourself a quiet space and do some yoga saying these affirmations. Jiraani, once again you demonstrated your great concentration and focus. You were a great role model and confidently took the lead in repeating the affirmations after me which encouraged the other children to follow.
Theorist Rose Pere's Te Wheke Model is one that we value here at BestStart Papamoa Plaza, as it relates to ones' overall wellbeing. Saying positive affirmations along with yoga coincide with Rose Pere's concept of Wairua (spiritual wellbeing), Hinengaro (the mind) and Taha Tinana (physical wellbeing).
On your plan your individual goal is for your emotional well-being to be supported so that you can transition to school with a positive 'can do' attitude.
Later this same afternoon, you got a little bit upset over something to do with your friends. We talked about what had happened and I reiterated to you the positive affirmations we said in the morning whilst doing yoga. "Remember Jiraani, you are strong, you are brave, you are kind, you are confident," I said. Jiraani, you stopped being upset and starting smiling, then I asked you to say them back to me, to which you did. This appeared to change your mindset and put you in a much happier mood. You carried on playing with your friends. Ka rawe Jiraani.
