In July we hosted the BestStart Oraha Road Family Fun Day, and it was a raging success! The fun day was a long time in the making, with preparations starting before COVID-19 struck, and the original date being set for March. We were all devastated when we had to postpone it, as we knew that in those uncertain times, a bit of joy would not have been unwelcome.

The idea of hosting a fun day was to give back to our centre community as well as the wider community. Many a local came with their family to enjoy the afternoon. There was a bouncy castle, face painting, free sausage sizzle, the Kumeu Volunteer Fire Brigade, Kumeu/Huapai Police, a plethora of market stalls run by locals, and, the pièce de résistance, Suzy Cato (who hasn’t aged a bit in the last 20 years!). Local businesses and the BestStart Oraha Road team made generous donations for a number of raffles, and the $670 raised through ticket sales went to the Kumeu Volunteer Fire Brigade. We are very grateful to everyone who contributed, and we know the Fire Brigade are, too.

As a centre, we pride ourselves on the quality of the relationships we have with our families, and want to extend this to include the wider community. The wider community is an integral part of any early learning centre; affirming a child’s community within their learning environment and inviting active participation from the community supports children in making connections across different contexts, which in turn supports a sense of belonging for children as well as their families. This is a relationship we will continue to nurture.
