With this chilly weather, what better time is there to use our firepit in the meadow! The tamariki watch closely as we prepare the firepit - first we go scrunch, scrunch, scrunch- in goes the newspaper. Next we collect up some kindling (and a few unwanted bits from the carpentry area) and strategically place a few bigger logs on top. Now for the fun part. The fire! But before this flickering flame if left to dance around our firepit- we first talk about the expectations and how we keep ourselves safe around fire.

Some tamariki are entranced by the flam

es and just stand there captivated while others search for sticks to hold and put in the fire.

We love risky play at BestStart Mt Eden. In a supervised, safe and prepared environment, children can make decisions, assess the situation and engage in risk play at their own pace- in their own way. The firepit is just one of many ways we encourage risk play in our centre, teaching our tamariki to recognise, assess and react to risk in their daily play in a safe way.
