Cultural celebrations are an essential part of our curriculum at First Steps Newmarket, and Lunar New Year activities are our one of our favourite events celebrated in the centre. Today we celebrated the Lunar New Year with lots of fun and festivity! The children and teachers came to the centre dressed in their favourite red and pink clothes. We explored Chinese and Korean traditional music by joining in with dancing and singing Chinese and Korean songs.

Kellie and Jasmine, teachers who are originally from Korea and Yilin from China have shared and talked to children about important traditions and culture from their own experience. Welearnt from them that the Lunar New Year is the celebration of the year, a time for happy reunions, family and friends, rich in colourful traditions and customs.

The children made some lanterns, piggy paper plate art and a massive dragon decoration using our handprints. One of the highlights of our celebration was making some yummy dumplings. They all did an awesome job with it! We also discussed with the children all the other cultures and identity of our teachers and children. Then we learnt how to say ‘Hello!’ in different languages.
