Around April this year Nikau and I went on a little excursion to Mitre 10 to find some plants to put into our vegetable garden.  He chose broccoli, cauliflower, celery and spinach.  Then some of our friends had the pleasure of planting them in our planter box.

For weeks the children had been regularly checking on their plants to see how much they had grown and they would recycle the water from our water feature to feed the plants.  It was so exciting for them to finally see the first sprout of broccoli!

We let them grow to about the size of my hand before harvesting and taking them inside to wash.  At this stage, the spinach leaves were also ready as well as some of the celery.  We firstly sampled the broccolli raw, then steamed and then with some cheese sauce.  We then made a big pot of vegetable soup using the ingredients from the garden and others and ate this for afternoon tea.
