Here at BestStart Hastings Central we provide an environment where our children are encouraged to learn with and alongside others. We continually observe tamariki building close friendships with each other, and we have small groups of children who spend long periods of time playing and learning together, getting up to all sorts of fun and exploration!

From climbing to sliding, to exploring our garden walkway, to digging and building in the sandpit - they do it all side by side, watching and learning from each other while having a great time.

Playing and learning alongside their peers have many benefits including:

* enhancing verbal communication skills

* learning social skills such as negotiating and problem-solving

* co-construction of learning - watching and learning from each other.

Our children’s sense of wellbeing and belonging in this place is obviously well established. They feel safe and secure enough to branch out to others and build reciprocal friendships, to engage with each other in play, and to learn and develop alongside each other.
