Gardening and Sustainability
Teaching our tamariki the importance of living a sustainable life is something that we all value and having gardens that the children help tend to is a great way to do just that!
We have had an abundance of fresh produce from the garden over the last few months and now it is time to start again! With new, in-season vegetable plants ready to go, the tamariki got their hands dirty helping their Kaiako to pull out the weeds and old plants and prepare the ground for the new plants.
Gardening is a fantastic way for the children to connect and engage with nature and learn aroha and respect for Papatuanuku. The tamariki learned about the different vegetables that are now in season such as beetroot, cauliflower, beans and peas and spinach and lettuce.
We discussed the different kind of growing conditions they need and the Kaiako explained why we needed to have poles for the beans and peas to grow up and around! As a natural bug deterrent we use marigolds and the children enjoyed smelling these not so pleasant smelling flowers!
Everyone is very excited to look after and watch our garden flourish with some aroha and care. We look forward to sharing our nutritious, delicious treats with our whanau!
