The children at BestStart Richmond Kindy continue to learn about the professions in our community and we were lucky enough to have the local Fire Service visit. The Taupo Firefighters brought equipment and clothing and explained to the children about how they used these and how they kept themselves safe when fighting fires. They discussed smoke alarms with the children and the importance of an escape plan in case of a fire at home, and to meet at the mailbox if they had to leave the house. Children had opportunities to ask questions too... they wanted to know if the firefighters had ever rescued a cat from up a tree!?!

Children then had the opportunity to explore the appliance, sit up in the cab and ask questions about what they saw. Of course, they also got to do the most exciting thing of all... shoot water from the fire hose!

The Fire Crews' visit inspired the children to get creative, paining fire trucks and other emergency vehicles too.

Having knowledgeable members of our community come into the centre and share their knowledge with us is a key part of our philosophy and supports our centre vision to 'Play together, stand together, learn together.'
