This month in the pre school room we have been focusing on group interactions with the children, to help them build and strengthen new friendships and a sense of belonging . As we have set up provocations, we have noticed that most of the children have been reminding each other of rules and are quick to point it out when they are not being followed. To support this interest, we decided to set up a day of game provocations including a balance of quiet inside games and some outside games that allow the children to develop their large motor skills and release their extra energy. As the children joined in, we gave them the clear rules to the games and ensured that they held each other accountable for sticking to the rules.

The children really enjoyed participating in all the provocations. It was a little tricky to start as everyone wanted to win and the disappointment when that did not happen was a lot. We had some great discussions around practicing and how the more we play the better we will get at the skill needed for each game or race. Towards the end of the day, we saw children cheering each other on and celebrating each win with their peers. These games have helped to strengthen existing friendships while also facilitating a positive environment to create new friendships and get to know their peers in the room.
