Happy New Year from BestStart Kapiti Road
Ngā mihi o te Tau Hou tamariki and whānau! Happy New Year!
We’ve had an amazing start to the year with lots of fun activities running through our holiday programme such as Tog Day, Wheels Day, Crazy Hair Day, Dress up Day, Disco Day, Rainbow Day, Sports Day, Messy Play Day and other fun activities.
We kick started our New Year programme with preparations for Chinese New Year where we made lanterns, dragon puppets, a dragon mask which we used for our dragon dance, tiger paintings, tiger masks and we had a go at calligraphy too! Our tamariki were excited to hear about the Emperor and the 12 animal race at wā whāriki/mat time and we then made our own masks and had our own race in our mara/garden. We also performed our own dragon dance to traditional lion dance music and then afterwards we learnt how to say Happy New Year in Mandarin. We all received our own red envelopes with a chocolate coin inside to celebrate the Year of the Tiger.
Through these amazing, fun activities we have been learning about our own and other’s cultures (Belonging/mana whenua, Te Whāriki). 新年快乐!
