Our Home of the Brave whānau set up and carried out lots of activities to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, to explore the spirit of Matariki and its extended meaning. We held celebrations for each of the 9 whetū, in the weeks leading up to Matariki.
As a whānau we then came together for an evening of love, kai and akoranga, as we hosted our Matariki evening.

During the beautiful celebration our whānau, tamariki and kaiako shared lots of laughter, and kōrero as we engaged in whanaungatanta.

We organsied fun activities such as a photo booth, gardening, face painting and a Matariki quiz!

There was food galore as we came together to provide the kai, with our wonderful whānau shared lovely dishes from their homes.

Through the quiz, we were sharing wānanga with our community, providing them with a fun way to engage in mōhiotanga, and mātauranga about Matariki and its significance. The event finished off with toasting marshmallows by the fire!

Through the activities, we celebrated and acknowledged Matariki along with the values, and teachings each whetū brings. We were acknowledging those who have passed on, reflecting on the year that has been, and preparing for the year ahead and our associated hopes and dreams. Also, we encourage kotahitanga as we come together to support one another and celebrate together. Moreover, our tamariki are able to explore and experience what Matariki is and how it can be represented with their peers and extended whānau.
