A month ago we contacted Horowhenua Council to explain our vision. At BestStart Foxton Beach we have a vision of growing and nurturing the kaitiaki (guardians) of the future. This means our children are going to be the ones responsible for looking after our forests, lakes, rivers, beaches and all of the creatures that live here. So we have an important role to play as teachers at ensuring we do this well and with enthusiasm.

Chris decided he wanted to be involved and saw value in what we were trying to achieve here. We already had vegetable gardens growing, fruit trees, seedlings starting out and bird feeders for the local visitors we have. He asked if we would want to be involved in the planting of the Cousins Ave reserve, how exciting. He arrived in his ute all loaded with soil, pots and seedlings of native trees. He spoke to the children about the specific types of trees we had and what our responsibility was as kaitiaki (guardians) on these very important seedlings.

We are to grow and nurture these for the council for a whole year then they will come to collect them and transfer them into the Cousins Ave reserve in Foxton Beach. What a huge honour to have this opportunity to help support community initiatives.
