Inglewood Good Sorts Winner September

Mary Boekman is the winner of BestStart Inglewood’s Good Sorts award this month. Mary is a prominent person in the Inglewood community, and she was nominated by Angela Amaru for the work she does as a Justice of the Peace as well as with the local genealogical society and at the Cue Theatre.

We welcomed Mary into our centre for a special mat time.  Tamariki sang her ‘Twinkle, twinkle, little star’ and then Mary told us about the work she does in the community.

The tamariki shared a little bit about all the lovely Grandmas and Grandads, Nanas and Poppa and Uncles and Aunties that are a part of their whanau.  We talked about the theatre and what Mary does there. This was a new concept for the children and is one we are exploring further by introducing them to plays and shows. In fact, we had a puppet show in our centre the following day.

The tamariki thought that Mary would be very busy and would need someone to get her some food every day. With this in mind, we presented Mary with a gift card from New World and a beautifully smelling gift pack donated by Amanda Lamb from local business Reflexology + to recognise her as an Inglewood Good Sort.

It was fantastic for the children to meet Mary as she is so knowledgeable about our community. We will certainly be calling on her again as our centre expands our vision of ‘Nurturing our Neighbourhood’. Mary helps the children understand what it means to be part of a community and appreciate all the different roles and people that make up Inglewood.

BestStart Inglewood’s Good Sorts community award helps our children feel connected to our wider community, understanding our history, our people and their place within it.

At BestStart Inglewood we feel it’s the little everyday things like a smile with your coffee, a helping hand at the supermarket, or that person who has worked hard to be successful. So if you know one of these ‘Good Sorts’ we would love you to nominate them by either filling out a form at our centre, or emailing us at inglewood@best-start.org. We also have nomination forms at Inglewood Book Shop, Inglewood Hammer Hardware, FunHo Toy Museum and the Library. Visit our webpage on www.best-start.org to find out more.
