During the month of April, our BestStart Wolverton Street tamariki had the wonderful privilege of being invited to watch a special performance at Glenavon Primary. Glenavon Primary is one of our local school’s where many of our preschool children start when they turn Five years old.  We have developed a wonderful partnership with the school through regular visits to their new entrant classrooms and their student also visiting us at BestStart Wolverton.

Glenavon Primary School and BestStart Wolverton Street have a common passion to showcase our rich multi-cultural communities.   Glenavon were preparing for their Cultural Showcase evening and we were lucky enough to have our very own sneak preview of the show.  Our Kaiako Lu and Theresa, accompanied by one of our parents, joined by eight of our Karekare tamariki set off on an excursion to watch the show.   It was a warm and sunny morning and off they walked to Glenavon Primary School! It was a great opportunity for our tamariki to enjoy being out in their local community and there were lots of discussions around road safety.   We stopped at the traffic lights, looked left, looked right and we even crossed the Zebra pedestrian crossing outside Glenavon Primary. Our tamariki were very much in awe of the big Primary tamariki and environments and were super excited to see the show J

We were greeted by a performance from the Kapa Haka group, and then went on to watch the Chinese, Tongan and Samoan performances.  We even got to see one of our Karekare friends who recently left BestStart Wolverton Street! Our tamariki displayed great curiosity, excitement, appreciation and respect as they clapped and shared their appreciated to each cultural performance. This was the first time our tamariki have been invited to a showcase and it was exciting to see them wait with anticipation for the next performance.  The walk back to our centre involved lots of discussions around the performances, costumes and countries.

We would like to thank Glenavon Primary for inviting us to be a part of this special event. We could see how much hard work, planning and passion was put into each performance and we are grateful our tamariki had a chance to be immersed in so much rich culture.
