Keeping ourselves healthy with Kai Kōrero
We have been excited to welcome Kai Kōrero to our centre over recent weeks. Kai Kōrero is a WAVE (Wellbeing and Vitality in Education) programme supporting healthy eating and oral health for Early Childhood Education in South Canterbury.
The programme ran over 4 weeks, starting in the first week of this term. It involved the WAVE healthy eating team coming to our centre, holding an interactive display session once a week.
These sessions included: a different healthy eating topic and display in our foyer, various resources and handouts to use in the classroom and for parents and whanau, taste testers and the recipes to take home, and opportunities for parents and whanau to ask questions. Tamariki were excited to take home a new toothbrush and mini toothpaste provided by WAVE too.
Kaiako also supported this learning in the classrooms, introducing songs, resources, discussions and art experiences promoting healthy eating and oral hygiene.
The fourth week saw us host a breakfast for tamariki and whanau, where parents and whanau were all invited to come and share in a delicious breakfast, celebrating our healthy eating and oral health learning and awareness. What a lovely way to start the day. Tamariki enjoyed making their own fruit kebabs, trying banana and berry Weetbix smoothies, toast, and egg and baked beans bread pockets. Yum!!
Thank you WAVE for making this programme available, we had a great time learning how to keep ourselves healthy!
