BestStart Montessori Rongotai joined BestStart Montessori Kilbirnie’s annual excursion or our four and five year olds to visit Kupe’s landing site in Seatoun.

The excursion is prepared for by reading the story with the children, watching a short video on our iPad and following up with some art work depicting the stories we have heard.  According to Maori stories Kupe's journey to Aotearoa was triggered by difficulty with fishing in his homeland of Hawaiki. The problem was a great wheke (octopus) belonging to Kupe's competitor. Kupe set out in his waka to kill the wheke across the Pacific Ocean and the pursuit brought him to New Zealand.

The reserve is significant to New Zealand history.

What a wonderful day out – this has become a regular excursion for our older children and they enjoy everything from the bus ride, the walk, the picnic and especially the play park.   So much learning about our local history through stories and art bringing it all to life for the children.
