Learning Journeys

Our beautiful purpose-built centre has been open for just over a year now and in that time, we have been settling tamariki into our BestStart whanau. Our whole centre believe that the settling process is one of the most important parts to our tamariki learning journey and take time to get to know the child and whanau before they begin with us.

Our settling process consists of a 30 minute visit during a convenient time for both whanau and kaiako to chat to whanau and engage with the child in a calm welcoming manner, this allows us to get to know the child and whanau on a more personal level and helps us to find out parents aspirations and the child’s interests which allows us to use these interests to settle the child on drop offs. We then move towards the child being dropped off for 30 minutes to allow the child to say goodbye but know that their whanau come back quickly after they say good bye.

We then have a 45 minute drop off where the child engages in play and begins to build trusting relationships with kaiako and develop a sense of belonging in their new environment. We also encourage our whanau to start their children a week before they start work to allow the child to have shorter days whilst they adjust to daycare.

All children have access to these and more if they require. We believe that this settling process along with open communication works well to support whanau and tamariki into our early learning centre.
