Recently the tamariki have been very interested in the blocks. Not only have they been creating things they have been using the blocks for a range of learning purposes such as maths, length and longitude, height, roads for cars, shapes and much more. We also have been adding complexity by combining other areas of play with the blocks to bring an exciting change and for the tamariki to use their imaginations

A group of tamariki have been incorporating the animals into their play with blocks and making zoo enclosures; this has been great to observe as we have seen a lot of communication between tamariki sharing their knowledge with one another and using dramatic play. Dramatic play is great for tamariki to improve their abilities and confidence in socialising and communicating with others.

Another group of children have been using the blocks for their car ramps, they have been elevating the blocks and letting their cars go down. It has been great to observe this as they have gained an understanding that when they add or adjust the blocks to make their ramp steeper, they are able to make their cars go faster. The children have been learning about simple maths and science, such as length and gravity and how they can manipulate their play to make things go faster and slower.

Blocks are such a great open resource that children can use in many ways to explore ideas. Fun learning moments with the blocks can lead children to learn about balance, weight, and gravity as they work to build their masterpieces. Block play also supports children to grow confidence in their own ability, to persevere when solving building challenges and to cooperate as they build with others.
