After months watching our pumpkin grow on our vine at the centre we decided it was time to make some yummy pumpkin soup for lunch. After helping the tamariki  to cut the pumpkin into small pieces they each took turns scraping all the seeds and the stringy flesh part off each piece pumpkin. We then got a leek from the fridge and brought it out to  the table to be cut into slices. The leek is a healthy way to make our pumpkin soup creamy, this is a much healthier option than using cream Nga tamariki took turns putting the ingredients into the soup maker. We added a  small spoonful of vegetable stock, cinnamon and nutmeg for added flavour, no salt was added.  Finally and  very carefully we  added the water. Tino pai to mahi tamariki. What great team work you all demonstrated. After this was cooked we all had a taste. This activity was a great way to introduce and explore  food, to reinforce the importance of hygiene, following directions, developing an understanding of healthy foods and how food changes  when cooked. It is important for children to  build a positive experience with fresh foods as these are the foundations to good health and eating habits.
