At BestStart Montessori Johnsonville we love learning about our local area. Dr Montessori said "The senses, being the explorers of the world, open the way to knowledge". What better way to learn about our local area than to use all our senses.

We have extended on our walks to our local Maunga Mount Kaukau by now taking small groups of children right to the top. This journey takes about two hours return, and the children love to see the expansive view of Wellington and the harbour.

The older children that have gone many times now like to take leadership of these Hikoi and enjoy showing the other children in the group how to get there. Today Rachel, our centre manager, made a map of our local area onto corflute. The children coloured in the roads, and then some were able to trace the direction on the map of where to go.

They finished the activity with making cars out of Duplo and driving around the streets. Wooden signs were provided also to extend on this.
